Located within Winged Deer Park on the shores of Boone Lake, the Winged Deer Trail System is one of the best examples of what a passionate volunteer community can accomplish.
Created in 2016 through a partnership between the City of Johnson City and SORBA Tri-Cities, nearly every foot of trail was built by volunteers who dedicated countless hours to transforming a wooded hillside into one of the region's most popular mountain bike destinations. The vision was completed in 2022 with the opening of Kidd Dreamline, bringing the trail system to nearly five miles of thoughtfully designed singletrack.
Winged Deer was designed with progression in mind. Seven interconnected trails offer a little bit of everything, from smooth, flowing singletrack and beginner-friendly loops to natural rock features, berms, optional technical lines, and fast descents. Whether it's a child's first ride on Tom Sawyer, intermediate laps on Fly By Night, or challenging yourself on Roll the Bones and YYZ, the system encourages riders to build confidence while having fun. The addition of Kidd Dreamline, funded through a generous community donation, added rollers, berms, skinnies, rock features, and progressive drops that can be ridden or easily bypassed, making it one of the area's best places to develop new skills.
One of the biggest draws of Winged Deer is its accessibility. Located just minutes from downtown Johnson City, the trailhead is easy to reach and sits within one of the city's premier recreation areas. Riders can spend the morning on the trails before enjoying everything else Winged Deer Park has to offer, including the lake, disc golf course, playgrounds, walking paths, athletic fields, and scenic picnic areas. It's an ideal destination for families where everyone can find something to enjoy.
Today, Winged Deer remains one of the busiest trail systems in the Tri-Cities. On any given day you'll find everyone from kids on balance bikes to experienced riders dialing in technical features or squeezing in an after-work lap.
Built by the community and maintained by volunteers, it stands as a testament to what can happen when a shared vision and thousands of volunteer hours come together to create something truly special.
