Hidden away in the small mountain town of Hampton, the Hampton Watershed Trails prove that great trail systems don't have to be massive to leave a lasting impression. Originally built in 2003 through a partnership between Boy Scouts of America Troop 29 and the Northeast Tennessee Mountain Bike Association (now SORBA Tri-Cities), the original network featured just a few miles of hand-built Appalachian cross-country singletrack. More than two decades later, that grassroots effort has grown into one of Northeast Tennessee's favorite riding destinations, thanks to countless volunteer hours and an ambitious long-term vision for expansion.
The trail system offers something for every rider. The lower Pines Loop and River Loop provide approachable riding with beautiful views along the Doe River, while The Cat's Pajamas delivers steeper climbs and classic East Tennessee technical riding through rhododendron tunnels, rock gardens, and hardwood forests. In 2022, the system entered a new era with the addition of Bee's Knees, a purpose-built climbing trail, and Stemwinder, a fast, flow-filled descent that introduced a modern riding experience while preserving the character of the original trails. Additional phases of expansion are already planned, ensuring the Watershed continues to evolve for years to come.
One of the trail system's most unique features is its relationship with the Doe River. Several sections of trail run alongside the river, where it's common to catch glimpses of horses grazing or stopping for a drink on the opposite bank at Doe River Gorge, adding an unexpected touch of Appalachian charm to every ride.
The Hampton Watershed also serves as the perfect basecamp for a full day of adventure. Within just a few minutes, visitors can access the Appalachian Trail at nearby trailheads or spend the afternoon boating, fishing, paddling, or swimming on beautiful Watauga Lake. Laurel Falls Trailhead and Appalachian Trail and Watauga Point Recreational Area are both only a short drive away, making it easy to combine world-class hiking, mountain biking, and lake recreation into a single weekend.
Need to refuel after your ride? The nearby Roadrunner Markets is a favorite stop for riders, offering fuel, snacks, drinks, and clean restrooms just minutes from the trailhead.
Whether you're looking for technical old-school singletrack, modern flow trails, or simply a peaceful ride along one of East Tennessee's most scenic rivers, the Hampton Watershed Trails deliver an experience that feels authentic, welcoming, and unmistakably Appalachian.
